LOC 9
Influence Public Discourse
To demonstrate LOC9, I chose a paper from my Introduction to Health Communication course. In taking Introduction to Health Communication, I learned about the various tactics health campaigns use to influence and persuade public opinion about health issues and healthcare.
At the beginning of the course, we picked a medical condition or disease that interested us and researched areas such as cultural perspectives, patient-provider perspectives, and health campaigns for the health issue. Each topic was a separate research paper. For this LOC, I am focusing on the third paper which discusses ethics, health images, and health campaigns that surround asthma.
For health campaigns, the goal is to promote awareness and create a behavior change. For many of the health campaigns, selecting a specific audience was shown to be more effective in influencing behavior change and expanding knowledge about asthma. The campaigns were also meant to spark conversations with a medical professional.
Reading about these topics for my health issue, I was able to evaluate what was an effective communication strategy and what wasn’t working. In the class, we discussed what the challenges were in communicating to particular groups and ways to promote better health awareness within different communities.
